First Year Seminar - Topical Guides

Books could be shelved by:

  • the order in which they are received
  • date of publication
  • height
  • color
  • number of pages
  • by the author's middle name

These schemes are all ridiculous because they do nothing to help the researcher.

There are 3 subject classification systems in use at CCL.

Bound Volumes and Microforms of Scholarly Journals and Popular Magazine are Shelved Alphabetically by Title.

  • before 1980 [levels 4 and 5 of the stacks]
  • 1980-1999 [3rd floor]
  • 2000-present [2nd floor]

When you identify a useful book from our print collection and go to the shelves to find it:

DON'T - be in a hurry to find it and check it out.

DO - make a habit of always planning to spend 20 minutes browsing though the books in the vicinity of your selected book to see what is there and what ideas you might otherwise not have gotten.
