The Chicago Manual of Style "has become the authoritative reference work for authors, editors, proofreaders, indexers, copywriters, designers, and publishers," according to www.chicagomanualofstyle.org.

It is recommended for use by scholars in:

When you have a question about Chicago Style, you'll want to do one of the following:

• Find a copy of the newest edition of the manual
• Visit the online Chicago Manual, especially their Citation Quick Guides. 
• Visit the Purdue Owl's Chicago Help Guide, including their
  • PowerPoint, a helpful introduction 
  • Author-Date Style sample paper
  • Notes and Bibliography Style sample paper
• The Bowdoin College Library in Maine has created a helpful guide specifically about government documents (as of March 2018, it references the 15th edition of the Chicago manual):
