Book Reviews

This is a quick four-step guide to locating book reviews.

Finding Reviews for Older Books from the Era Before Databases

Every database is limited in the number of journals it indexes as well as the date range for the issues that it does.  So you may have a book for which you cannot find many or any reviews online.  For example, a book published in the 1940s could easily not be in any database resources.

You might have better luck with some of our print resources.  This is old-fashioned research which requires that you come to the library.  The results can be very satisfying though.

There are three print index titles that are particularly good at offering book reviews.

Book Review Digest
(all the way back to 1905)

Book Review Index
(from 1965-1989)

Readers' Guide to Periodical Literature
(all the way back to 1907 with the special book review section launched in 1976)

Here is a complete listing of all of our print indexes divided up conveniently by decade.
