The Research Cycle

Get a Working Knowledge (or Background Knowledge) of Your Topic

  • Before you do anything else, you need to get some background knowledge - or working knowledge - of your topic.
  • Having a working knowledge of your topic means you can talk about it for a minute without repeating yourself.

You can get working knowledge - or background information - from:

  • textbooks
  • Encyclopedias or other reference books
  • Browsable library databases
  • Credible websites

E-Book Encyclopedias Link

  • Most professors will not want you to cite Wikipedia in a scholarly paper.
  • Using authoritative encyclopedias like what you find in our e-book encyclopedia list allows you to obtain background information that you can actually cite in your own work.
