- Biological Abstracts
Is a huge collection of bibliographic references covering life science and biomedical research literature published in more than 4,200 journals internationally. - CINAHL {Cumulative Index of Nursing and Allied Health Literature}
CINAHL (Cumulative Index of Nursing and Allied Health Literature) indexes and abstracts more than 900 nursing, allied health, biomedical, and consumer health journals. It includes healthcare books, nursing dissertations, standards of professional practice, nurse practice acts, and educational software. - Directory of Open Access Journals Is a comprehensive list of scholarly journals which make the full text of their articles freely available on the web.
- Dissertations & Theses: Full Text Indexes doctoral dissertations accepted at accredited U.S. institutions since 1861. It selectively covers Master's Theses, Canadian dissertations, and British and other European dissertations going back to 1637. Nearly half of the records link to the full-text document.
- Films on Demand Is a large multi-disciplinary collection of streaming video.
- Health Source -- Consumer Edition Features full text for: over 80 general health, nutrition and professional health care magazines; 130 books; and more than ten thousand reports and pamphlets.
- JSTOR Is an online archive of scholarly journals which contains high-resolution, scanned images of journal issues and pages as they were originally designed, printed, and illustrated.
- Learning Express Library Provides practice tests and test preparation guides for many of the most common standardized tests. It also offers courses, e-books, and practice tests for improving basic skills along with job search and career development.
- MEDLINE Produced by the National Library of Medicine and covers journal literature published internationally in all areas of medicine.
- Merck Manuals Are best-selling standard medical texts. Several variations are free on the web.
- Project Muse Is an online archive of scholarly journals. Articles are searchable in a number of ways and may be viewed as web pages and in some cases as PDF files.
- PubMed Central Is a digital archive of peer-reviewed life sciences journal literature written in English that was created and is maintained by the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
- SAGE Research Methods Online Offers comprehensive information on research methodology primarily in the social sciences (but in other disciplines as well) taken from hundreds of publications by SAGE.
- Learning Express Library Provides practice tests and test preparation guides for many of the most common standardized tests. It also offers courses, e-books, and practice tests for improving basic skills along with job search and career development.
Peer Review
What is Peer Review?
It is the quality control system for scholarship. It means that articles in a peer-reviewed journal must be scrutinized by experts before they are published. SYNONYMS = 'academic', 'juried', 'refereed', 'scholarly'.
How can you tell when something is peer-reviewed?
1) When you are looking at a print copy, of an entire issue of a journal, the editorial board of scholars with academic credentials and institutional affiliations will be listed somewhere. These are the 'peers' that review each published article.
2) Use a check box limit in your database search (when available).
3) Consult Ulrich's Periodicals Directory. (Search on the source title NOT the article title.) An icon of a referee's jersey will indicate that the journal is peer-reviewed.
